CORE CONCEPTS

Explore the Topics

Living cells continuously emit extremely low levels of light known as ultra-weak photon emission (UWPE). This light is a natural byproduct of metabolic processes, particularly oxidative reactions inside the cell. Researchers use highly sensitive instruments to detect and study these emissions. Some investigate whether the intensity or pattern of biophoton emission reflects cellular state, stress levels, or communication between cells.
A portion of biophoton research discusses the possibility of ordered (coherent) light emission from living systems. The idea is that biological systems may use electromagnetic signals in addition to chemical messengers for regulation and communication. These concepts remain under scientific investigation and are not part of mainstream consensus medicine.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) refers to the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence cellular function. Research often focuses on absorption by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, potential effects on ATP production, modulation of reactive oxygen species, and downstream influences on inflammation and tissue recovery pathways.
Early work in the 1920s by Alexander Gurwitsch described “mitogenetic radiation.” Later researchers, including Fritz-Albert Popp, developed more sensitive detection methods and explored the idea of biophoton coherence. Modern photobiomodulation research has grown into a large field with thousands of published studies.
